Weekly Highlights

Wow!!!! What an amazing fall & holiday selling season!!! I hope that your Usborne business has been FUN and a BLESSING to you and your family this year! This will be our last weekly highlight post until the new year. I can't wait to see what amazing things are in store for our team in 2011! Here are a couple of highlights from this week...

  • Tara Maple (Opelika, AL) earned the BIG PRIZE in the Want it! Win it! promotion...she is getting her pick between an iPad, a big flat screen TV, or $500!!!
  • The new incentive trip destination was announced...EVERY ONE of you has the opportunity to earn a trip to ARUBA!!!!!

Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I want to take ya...

Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama! Pretty Usborne mamas need a trip to a tropical paradise...pretty Usborne mamas are going to be sitting on a beach in Aruba!!!!! Randall made the big announcement last night...5 nights in the tropical paradise of Aruba! So, who is going with us!?! The details of what we need to do to earn the trip are coming very soon. What can you be doing while you wait? RECRUIT! RECRUIT! RECRUIT! Recruits that sign up this month will Bronze during the trip earning period and you are definitely going to need Bronze recruits to earn the trip. And remember....December recruits get a 16-week incentive period!!! That means they will have even longer to reach Bronze! There may even be friends, family, or customers who want to become a consultant so that they can earn this amazing trip too! What else can you be doing? FILL YOUR 2011 calendars! You will not only need recruits to earn this vacation to paradise, but you will also need to have sales!

One of the things I am most thankful for with my Usborne business is the opportunities it has given my family. In the 3 years that I have been a consultant with Usborne I have been able to take my husband on a dream vacation to Rome, Italy, and this past April I was able to take my oldest son on a 7-day cruise through the Hawaiian Islands. Both of these experiences are absolute treasures and they would not have happened without my Usborne business. This coming April I will again get to take my husband on a dream vacation...this time to London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland!

One of best things about earning these trips is that EVERYONE has an equal opportunity to do so! A brand new consultant is on a level playing field with someone who has been with the company for 15 years...the requirements are the same and you only earn points for the business you do during the 9-month trip earning period. The secret is setting the goal and making a plan! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! Make your goal to be on this trip and share your goal with your spouse, your family, your supervisor, and your Usborne team! I would love to help you come up with a plan to make sure you are on that plane to Aruba!

Weekly Highlights

I hope you have all had a great week! We are nearing the Christmas sales finish line! I hope you have had great sales AND have been focusing on your January and 2011 calendars!!! ;) Here are some highlights from this week...
  • Tara Maple (Opelika, AL) is currently #22 on the President's Club leaderboard!!!
  • Deanna Leras (Auburn, AL) had a booth this week where she booked 3 home parties for January!
  • The next incentive TRAVEL CONTEST will be announced on Tuesday!!!!! Wherever we are going, I promise it will be amazing!!! I just earned my 3rd trip with Usborne and each one has been absolutely incredible...I have been able to share Rome, Italy with my husband and a 7-day Hawaiian cruise with my 9-year-old son. These are memories that will last a lifetime! I want to share the next trip with you guys! So, are you going!?! Make it a goal NOW to earn this trip!

Weekly Highlights

What an amazing month November was for our team!!! There were so many exciting things going on! Don't let this momentum end with Christmas! Get out those 2011 calendars and start filling them up...especially January!!! :)

Our New Supervisor - Tara Maple

Congratulations to Tara Maple, our team's newest Supervisor!!! Tara became an Usborne consultant just a little over a year ago as a way to provide extra income for her family and great books for her kids! Tara also homeschools, so having free and discounted Usborne books was a huge plus for her. Tara got her business off to a great start right away, but it wasn't until attending Usborne National Convention this summer that she really caught hold of the team-building aspect of our business. At convention, Tara made the goal to promote to Supervisor this fall. The picture on the left is of Tara with our Usborne "family tree" at our team dinner at convention. All the branches are the Supervisors under Nancy Ann Wartman (there are a LOT more branches that didn't fit in the picture!). Tara added her name to the family tree, came home from convention and immediately began building a team in the Auburn/Opelika area. Since August, her team has exploded resulting in November group net sales of over $4500!!!

If building a business with Usborne is something you desire to do, then promoting to Supervisor is the MOST IMPORTANT step in making that happen. I hope that you are all picking up on the correlation between attending Usborne National Convention and promoting to Supervisor. National Convention in Tulsa is the most motivating, inspiring, and helpful experience that our company offers to set you up for success in your business. So far, every consultant on our team who has attended convention has promoted to Supervisor within the next 5 months!!! But, why wait until June 2011 to get motivated! Set the goal to promote NOW and attend your first convention as a Supervisor! :) LeAnne, Julianne, Tara, and I are here to help you in any way we can! If you desire to promote, let us know and we will help you put a plan in place to make it happen!

  4. Send the "Two Days of Fantastic Savings" email to yourself.
  5. Forward the email on to customers with a personal note from you at the top!
There will also be marketing emails available for us to send out on the day of the sales...so be sure to remember to send those emails out on Friday morning, November 25 and Monday morning, November 29!!!

Mark your calendars! - Usborne National Convention 2011

I know that June is a LONG way away, but I want all of you to go ahead and begin thinking about joining us at convention this year in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The dates are June 10 & 11. Some of you may be thinking, "Why in the world would I want to spend 2 days of my summer in Tulsa at a convention!?!" But, I can honestly tell you that you if desire to grow your business with Usborne, going to convention is the BEST way to do that! You will leave excited, motivated, encouraged, and overflowing with new ideas. It will be well worth your time and expense in getting there. On that note, there are many ways you can begin preparing now for the expense of going to convention...
  • Plan to room with other consultants on our team. We always have 4 to a room and have tons of fun! :)
  • If you have frequent flier miles, use those for your flight to Tulsa.
  • Consider car pooling with other consultants...there are always people driving from all over the southeast that you could get a ride with.
  • Start a "Convention" envelope. After each event between now and convention, save $10 of your profit. If you have a healthy business calendar, you will have more than enough to pay for your flight and hotel room at convention!
  • Remember that the expense of convention is a business expense for tax purposes!
I would love to have every one of you join us this summer...you won't regret it! So mark your calendars and plan on joining us in Tulsa in June!!! :)

Conspiracy 365

I really can't say enough about this amazing series! It has gotten me in to schools and libraries I never have been in before...including one library I had been trying to work with for 3 years! It has increased my elementary school book fairs by drawing in the 5th graders...the group that is typically "too cool" for book fairs. It has made me an all-star to many librarians...they are seeing guys who have never loved to read frantic to get their hands on the next book. Many librarians have told me they have waiting lists for the books...which has resulted in them ordering another set (or 2)! I had one middle school that I have never worked with before order 2 copies of each book in the series...they called me just a week after they received the books to order 2 more copies of the first 3 books because they had 10 STUDENTS on the waiting list for January!

Why am I telling you all this? Because I want you to realize what a gold mine you have in your grasp. This series is EXCLUSIVE TO USBORNE CONSULTANTS. Translated: You are the ONLY place librarians and families can go to get these books!!!! This is a product you can be proud of...I am reading the series myself and have been blown away by how it keeps you on the edge of your seat, each book leaves you hanging and wanting to start reading the next one, and the content is completely appropriate for students.

So, how do you market this book? By telling EVERYONE!
  • Highlight it at home parties and booths...moms need to realize that we don't just have books for babies & toddlers. Usborne will continue to grow up with their kids by always providing great books...all the way to high school! Make sure your customers know that you can now get the books in boxed sets (4 books per box)...what a great Christmas present!
  • If you work with schools & libraries (or want to), let this be your "in" for getting an appointment. And know that they will end up ordering way more than just Conspiracy 365! :) Remember that to work with schools & libraries, you need to be an educational consultant.
  • If you have already sold the series to schools & libraries, give them a call and see if they need another set.
  • Send a letter to all the school libraries & libraries in your area about the series (make sure the school is not listed by another consultant before you do this). Include a copy of the wonderful Conspiracy 365 brochure (see below) available from the home office in the business supply store on your consultant site or in OrderPro. I sent this to a few middle schools in August and also included 5 Conspiracy 365 bookmarks (also available from the home office). I followed up each letter sent with a phone call for an appointment about a week later. I have listed 2 more middle schools as a result of this mail out!!! Let me know if you want a copy of the letter I used. :)
Let's continue to show the home office that they can trust us to sale these amazing books that they make exclusive to us!!!

The Supervisors received a very exciting email from Randall on Friday concerning the Want it? Win it! contest! Our New Supervisor - Julianne Carney

Congratulations to our team's newest Supervisor, Julianne Carney! Julianne became a consultant in February of this year in order to make enough money each month to pay the tuition for her daughters' schooling. She made the most of her incentive period, making it all the way to the Emerald level in the One-Step-at-a-Time Rewards program. Julianne joined us at the Usborne National Convention in Tulsa in July. At convention Julianne set the goal to promote to Supervisor on November 1, just 9 months after becoming a consultant. Julianne came back from convention excited and motivated. She has worked hard over the past 3 months and all of her hard work has paid off! Congratulations, Julianne! We are so proud of you and excited to have another Supervisor on our team!!! Promoting to Supervisor is the most important step you can take in making your Usborne job into a serious income-producing business for your family! Promoting to Supervisor - NOW is the time!!!

If you desire to really build a business with Usborne, then promoting to Supervisor is a necessary step to make this happen. Being a Supervisor means that you have begun building a team...and as a Supervisor you make a 11% override on your central group's net sales! This means a significant increase in income for essentially the same amount of work on your part! If promoting to Supervisor is something you want to do, then NOW IS THE TIME to do it! For the past year, the company has lowered the amount of active and Bronze recruits you need to promote. When I promoted you had to have 5 active and 5 Bronze recruits...until January 1, 2011 you only need 3 active and 3 Bronze recruits!!!! You also need $700 net personal sales and $2000 net group sales the 2 months prior to your promotion. Many of you have already set the goal to promote this fall. If you haven't, why not? The fall is the best selling season of the year! Your new recruits would have an easy time getting to Bronze by booking Christmas home parties. If you want to set a goal to promote to Supervisor by January 1, click on the Power of 3 logo under the Links on your consultant site. The home office announced this week that the opportunity to win an iPad OR a big screen TV is now available to all Usborne consultants AND supervisors! I'm pretty pumped that I am going to be able to earn one now too!!! :) Be watching on the top of your consultant site for a tracker to keep up with how you are doing. Remember you need $3500 net sales (retail sales - commission) and 3 Bronze recruits during the months of October - December. So now the question is...do you want an iPad or a gigantic TV??? Don't let this amazing opportunity pass you by! Get out your calendar and get on the phone...make sure you have enough events on your calendar to get the sales you need. Consultants only - iPad Challenge!!!!!

During the months of October, November, & December consultants have the opportunity to earn a free iPad from the home office! This is a CONSULTANTS ONLY challenge...in other words, I (and all other supervisors) can't earn an iPad.

Here is what you need to do to earn an iPad of your very own:
1. Sell $3500 net during October - December (our biggest selling months of the year!)

2. Have 3 personal recruits who reach Bronze ($750 net sales) during the months of October - December.

That's it!!! FYI...if you do this, you will probably also promote to Supervisor since having 3 Bronze recruits is one of the requirements for promoting to Supervisor! Promoting to Supervisor means that you will begin earning 11% on your central group's net sales every month! Don't worry...if you promote to Supervisor in the process of trying to earn an iPad, you will still get your iPad. All people who are consultants as of October 1 are eligible for the iPad. So what are you waiting for!?! Get out your calendar and get on the phone...don't let this amazing opportunity pass you by! Southeast Regional Training

We had a great time at the Southeast Regional Training this past Saturday! Seven members of our team were able to be there (Top: Melanie Bouyer, Deanna Leras, Tara Maple, Shannon Windsor; Bottom: Kelly Akers, LeAnne Haynes, Maegan Cody). Our president, Randall White, shared with us and introduced us to some great new fall titles! Directors, Nancy Ann Wartman and Sharon Riegal, also shared some secrets of their success with us. It was so great to hear from people who have been with our company for many years and have built very successful businesses with Usborne! Regional training and national convention are HUGE ways to get motivated to take our businesses to the next level! I hope many of you will be able to join us in Tulsa for the Usborne National Convention this year...go ahead and mark your calendars for June 10-11!

Internet-Linked Books

Our internet-linked (IL) books are amazing tools for families, teachers, and libraries. I want to make sure all of you understand how they work as well as the many benefits of our IL books. At every home party, library appointment, and booth I try to share with customers about our IL books. Basically, IL books provide you with internet links that go along with the book and provide more information on the topics covered in the book. You will know a book is IL because it will tell you somewhere on the cover of the book. Also, in the catalog the IL books are denoted by a little purple circle with "iL" in the middle. (For a key to all the symbols in the catalog, look on the contents page at the beginning of the catalog...page 4 in the Fall 2010 catalog.) You will notice that some books in the catalog are denoted as "iR"...this means internet-referenced. The difference is that IL books give you many internet links throughout the book, while IR books have a list of internet links in the back of the book.

How do IL books work? In the front of each IL book, it explains how they work so that our customers will know how to use them.
  1. Go to the Usborne Quicklinks website at www.usborne-quicklinks.com.
  2. Type in the key words for your book. They can be found at the beginning of your book on the page that explains how the Quicklinks work.
  3. Type in the page number of the links you want to access. Some IL books will have a header or footer on the page that denotes if there are links for that page. But, most IL books will have a IL box on each page that lets you know there are links for that particular page.

You should have received at least one IL book in your starter kit. Go grab it and check it out! I LOVE using the IL books with my boys! There is such a big variety of links in our IL books...articles to read, videos to watch, audios to listen to, games, experiments, puzzles, quizzes, worksheets to download, etc. There are also downloadable images that can be accessed on the Quicklinks site for kids to use in reports, etc. These are denoted in the IL books by a small black star next to the image.


Benefits of IL books (make sure to share these with customers!):
  1. Cost-efficiency - You are buying SO much more information that just what is included in the book!
  2. Time - When a child is studying a topic in school or researching a topic, the links provide a quick variety of resources for them. Also, Usborne regularly reviews and updates the links.
  3. SAFETY!!! - Parents do not have to worry about their child googling a topic and finding who knows what on the internet. All the sites are safe for little eyes!

Who to tell about our IL books
?
  1. Parents for their homes
  2. Teachers for their classrooms
  3. Librarians for their libraries

Always explain to them how the IL books work and the benefits of our IL books. People are continually impressed with this amazing feature of so many of our non-fiction books!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas Record-a-Story book

As of September 15, this wonderful book will be available! It is the classic story 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, but it is a recordable book. What a precious gift this Christmas! There are SO many people who could be blessed by this book...a school-aged child can record their voice reading the book and give it to their grandparents, grandparents can record themselves reading the book and send it to their young grandchildren, children can record themselves and send it to their dad stationed overseas with the military...the list of ideas goes on and on! As if that wasn't enough, the book also comes with 5 bonus gifts...2 Christmas music CD's and 3 Look & Find Activity books! To help us market this great new book, the home office has provided us with a wonderful flyer to use at home parties and booths and a marketing email to send to our customers. To access the marketing email login to your consultant site, under Links select Business Forms/Tools, UBAM Marketing Emails, "Special Sneak Peak - Arriving Sept 15!" You can send the email to yourself then email it out to your customers.

The Read-Aloud Handbook

Ryan and I were first given this book at a baby shower. I read it and was AMAZED at the extensive research, statistics, and first hand stories of the benefits of reading to children. We were so blessed to have the author, Jim Trelease, as one of our speakers at convention last year. It was so inspiring to be reminded of how important our job is...getting books into the hands of children, helping people build their home libraries, helping schools get books on their library shelves and in their classrooms, AND educating parents on the importance of reading to their children. This book is an excellent tool to incorporate into our home parties! Katie Hewitt, a Supervisor with Usborne, led an excellent seminar titled "Promoting Reading Aloud at Home Shows" at convention this year. I highly recommend listening to it! It is available on your consultant site under Links, Training, Audio Training, & Home Shows. And, if you have never read this fantastic book...guess what!?! It is available in our business supply store! You can add it to your next book order! You can also go to Jim Trelease's website at www.trelease-on-reading.com to download FREE brochures for parents such as, Ten Facts Parents Should Know About Reading and Why Read Aloud to Children.

Home Party Tips

One of the many great things about convention is being able to learn from other consultants. There is a phrase you here a lot with Usborne, "There is no need to re-invent the wheel." We can learn so much from other consultant's successes and failures. Last year I left for convention very frustrated with my home parties...I was sick of getting everything ready only to have a party with only 1 or 2 people in attendance. Yes, there is always the eShow. But, we all know that people really need to see and touch these amazing books to fall in love with them. So, at convention I was able to attend a seminar by Melissa Beyer that completely addressed all my frustrations! I have incorporated these tips and tricks and have seen HUGE results!!!


Home party problems & solutions:

Problem: Bad attendance

Solutions:


1. Hostess coaching:

  • Make sure the initial invitation to the party is either in person or over the phone. This is SO much more effective than emails or Evites...these are easier, but they are also easy to ignore and forget!
  • Let the postcard be a reminder, not the initial invitation.
  • Call your hostess 3 different times between booking the party and the party day. 1st call - to tell her to make her guest list and begin inviting over the phone or in person. 2nd call - the day you mail the "postcard reminders" to let her know they have gone out and to remind her to keep telling her friends. 3rd call - 2 days before the party to have her call everyone who has responded "yes" and those who have not responded one last time to remind them. Tell her we all can get "Mommy Brain" and completely forget!

2. Send the postcard reminders for your hostess
  • Yes, I know this is more work for you. Yes, I know it means paying for postage. But, it completely takes away any anxiety you have wondering if they ever got sent out!
  • As soon as a hostess books a party, I email her a blank Avery address labels template in Word and ask her to type in her addresses and email it back to me. Then, all I have to do is print, peal, & stick!
  • Put them in the mail 10 days before the party date.

Problem: Not getting started on time

Solution: On time drawing

  • I let the guests know about the "on time drawing" by putting a little return address label sticker on the postcard reminders that says: Arrive on time! Free book drawing at 7:05
  • As guests arrive, I give them a drawing ticket (2-part raffle tickets from Wal-Mart).
  • At exactly 5 minutes after the party start time, I draw a ticket. I have a basket of books the winner can choose from.
  • My basket of drawing books are free books I have collected from Home Office Challenges, booths where there wasn't an organization to redeem free books, etc.


Problem: Not getting home party bookings at every home party

Solutions:

  1. Circle or highlight available dates on your calendar and put stickers on the dates you really want to fill (i.e. the most recent ones that you don't want to pass by without having a party). Stickered date = free book from basket of books :)
  2. Gift-bagged brownie mix or cookie mix for anyone who books at the home party. Ensure them that is all they need to do to prepare for their guests...they don't even have to go to the store!

Problem: No body pays any attention to what I say because they are looking at the catalog

Solution: Wait to give out catalogs until AFTER you have shared

  • When guests come in I only give them 3 things: a clipboard with a wish list attached, their free book drawing ticket, and a pen.
  • I wait until AFTER I have shared about the books, the hostess benefits, and the business opportunity to give them a catalog...but only after I receive their customer survey. Keep reading. :)

Problem: Not getting back customer surveys

Solution: Fill out your customer survey and I will give you a catalog

  • Getting back customer surveys is HUGE because guests may mark on there that they are interested in having a party or becoming a consultant but would never tell you in person.
  • After my presentation, I pass out customer surveys and ask them to wave them in the air when they are done. Then I bring them their catalog.
  • When they are "checking out" after making their selections, I will find their customer survey and see if they checked any boxes. If they did, I will follow up with them right then by either getting their party on the calendar or talking with them about being a consultant and giving them a recruiting packet and maybe even signing them up!

As I said earlier, these things have really helped my home parties. I have higher attendance which has resulted in higher sales! Give these tips a try and see how it goes!

Game Time Recruiting

Ok, gals...starting today we can offer this AMAZING opportunity for only $20!!! We have 2 weeks to invite people to join our team at such a low start-up cost. So easy and the sales from the party can count towards the hostess!!!

The next people we need to tell about this amazing kit is everyone else! :) Home party guests, people at booths, our repeat customers, friends who love the books, friends who could use some extra income, friends who home school, teachers...and the list goes on. This is your chance to BUILD YOUR TEAM and work towards PROMOTING!!!!

Nancy Ann provides us with a wonderful recruiting tool every month on her training website. Each month she designs recruiting mini-flyer/postcards featuring the current kit. They are amazing! I print them on white cardstock and type in my info before printing. There are 4 to a sheet. I cut them and have them laying out at booths, home parties, etc. They are very compact but very informative. Print some off and have them available at all your events the next 2 weeks. Her website is www.usborneachievers.com. (Email me for Username & Password!) The postcards are available on the very first page. It would also be a good idea to have some recruiting packets available at your upcoming events as well. I just use the cheap 2-pocket folders (which are on sale at Office Max for a penny right now!) and include the "Monthly Recruiting Pack" which can be downloaded from the CIA site on your consultant website. You can also include a Spring catalog (since you can't use them anymore) and the little recruiting brochures that came in your starter kit.
